St. Hovhaness’ (John’s) Chapel

According to a legend, in the 13th century, the relics of St. John the Baptist were summoned in the pilgrimage site of St. Hovhannes in Hartagyugh (Ghaltakhchi). There is no historical evidence for this, the only evidence is the miracles performed by the people who made the covenant here.

The chapel-sanctuary of St. John, according to folk beliefs, cures infertility and diseases. Every year thousands of pilgrims visit the sanctuary as a token of gratitude, erecting khachkars in the area of the chapel in return for the miracle performed with them. Evidence of miracles is more than 200 khachkars placed here since 2005, each a story of a happy family, an illness overcome, a wish fulfilled. The chapel is located on the top of a hill about 2150 m high, to reach the top of which you have to walk 3 km.

The original appearance of the chapel has not been preserved, as it was destroyed three times during the Soviet years by non-believers and restored by the efforts of villagers and believers. This place of pilgrimage is one of the seven famous pilgrimage sites of Armenia.
